Samantha and Nellie Books and Magnetic Mini World (Meet Samantha)

Millions of girls loved the TV movie. Now have more fun and games with Samantha! Includes magnetic mini world (including dolls), two books, a bookmark, a package of Nellie trading cards, and a package of American Girl trading cards.

Samantha is an only child growing up during the Edwardian period (although American Girl designated her as Victorian). Orphaned at age five and raised by her wealthy Victorian-era grandmother in fictional Mount Bedford, New York, Samantha befriends a poor servant girl named Nellie O'Malley. Eventually Samantha, Nellie and Nellie's young sisters are adopted by Samantha's uncle and aunt. Samantha book themes include women's suffrage, child labor, and classism. The first two books in the core series were written by Susan S. Adler; the third book by Maxine Rose Schur; the last three by veteran American Girl author Valerie Tripp. The multiple authorship has been criticized for disconnectedness of the characterizations. The Samantha doll has dark brown hair now (the original had lighter brown hair, but it was changed in the early nineties); fair skin; and dark brown eyes.

Red Om Productions produced "Samantha, An American Girl Holiday," in cooperation with American Girl. This made-for-TV movie starred AnnaSophia Robb, then 10, as Samantha and Mia Farrow as Samantha's grandmother. The show premiered on WB Television Network in November 2004 and was released to DVD soon thereafter.

Nellie Mini Doll By American Girl

cute little dolls.... They're great!
For little girls who love american girl but don't want to buy the real doll? This would be perfect for you! I have one, and it is really an exact replica of one of the larger dolls. You can take off their clothes, and their hair is brushable, and they come with a cute little book!

Cute as they can be!
I just love the AG mini dolls and especially the nice prices that I was able to get mine for lately on Amazon.com. Mattel has done a super nice job with these little dolls. They have just as much detail as the full sized 18 inch dolls. I couldn't get over Nellie's little shoes looking just like big Nellie's shoes. As much as I love shopping AG's website, I always check Amazon if I'm in the market for an AG mini doll!

Adorable mini doll!
The books are tiny and cute, but not pretend or toys. If you are looking for the book, you should get the full sized book. This book is more a toy for the full sized doll, as I believe the Nelly doll was meant to be the Samantha doll's toy doll and book. My daughter only has a Nelly and Samantha mini doll, however, and she loves them. Even when the hair gets all frizzy, all it takes is running your hand over it a few times to smooth it back down. High quality construction as expected from the American Dolls. A wonderful pocket doll!

In 1998, Pleasant Company became a subsidiary of Mattel, Inc.

The company's flagship line is a collection of historical 18-inch dolls that come with books and accessories. The dolls, representing 9-10 year old girls, live through important times in American history and provide a child's perspective of significant events in American history.

In 1983, educator, writer and entrepreneur, Pleasant T. Rowland was looking for dolls to give her nieces for Christmas, and found only baby, teen and adult dolls. That shopping experience, coupled with a visit to Colonial Williamsburg, inspired her to create the American Girl line of historical dolls and books.

In 1986 the first Pleasant Company catalogs had Samantha Parkington, Kirsten Larson, and Molly McIntire. These featured the first three stories of each character's eventual six-book series, as well as their pajamas, beds and trunks. The doll's facemold was designed by Götz, a German doll-maker. The company added three historical characters (Felicity Merriman in 1991, Addy Walker in 1993, and Josefina Montoya in 1997) as well as a magazine American Girl, a line of contemporary 18-inch 'American Girl of Today' dolls and the 'Bitty Baby' collection for younger girls.
